OBITUARY
MISS SARAH BUCHANAN The many friends in this district of Miss Sarah Eliza Buchanan will regret to hear of her death in Auckland, which followed a 'short illness. Miss Buchanan was born at Picton in 1873. and came to Gisborne with her parents as an infant. Her father, the late Mr. A. G. Buchanan, was an early settler at Ormond, and held one of two licenses then current in the old military settlement. Some time after his death his widow remarried, her second husband being the late Mr. John Maynard. The family grew up in this district and Miss Buchanan after completing her education .ioined the staff of the Post and Telpgraph Department at Gisborne, being the first exchange cadet enrolled here for telephone duties. She continued in the department from 1897 to 1917. and was greatly esteemed for efficiency and courtesy in a time when personal contact was much closer between the public and the departmental staff than now. The possessor of a fine natural soprano voice Miss Buchanan took a prominent part in choir work, particularly in connection with St. Mary’s Church, and also was active in amateur theatrical efforts for many years. Since 1929 she had' been living in retirement in Auckland. She is survived by four sisters. Mrs. M. Rowland. Auckland, Mrs. N. Keacly, Auckland, Mrs. C. Quinn. Gisborne and Mrs. C. Gosling, Pahiatua, and two brothers, Mr. J. M. Buchanan. Auckland and Mr. H. L. Maynard, Gisborne. A third brother, Mr. A. J. Maynard, Gisborne, predeceased her by some years.
