IMMIGRANTS “FED-UP WITH S. AFRICA”
DURBAN,
An immigrant family, Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Beal, of Fenniscowles road, Durban, are returning to England shortly because they are fed-up with South Africa, and especially Durban. They have written to Mr. Winston Churchill complaining about the way South Africans treat immigrants and warning him about Communism among the natives. They have also written to a London newspaper telling prospective immigrants not to come to South Africa.
“We paid £IOOO to fly to South Africa,” said Mrs. Beal, “and we are willing to pay £2OOO to go back home again,”
Thrashings Alleged
They allege that their two young sons have come home frequently with bleeding noses after having been thrashed by other boys on the pretext that the shortage of meat in South Africa was due to its export to Britain. Among the reasons given by Mr. and Mrs. Beal for not liking South Africa are that some children run around without shoes, shop assistants and pedestrians in Durban never laugh, and that Durban people are willing to stand up for “God S">ve the King.” but are not willing to be friendly .to British subjects. , , , . Mr. Beal has the greatest admiration for the 1820 settlers, but, he says, “if people in Durban do not want us as South Africans we would rather go back to England and be Britishers.”
