Meat Ration To Be Adjusted To Price
(11 a.m.) LONDON, April 7. The Ministry of Food announced that the present meat ration of lOd weekly would be “appropriately adjusted to compensate for the increase in price.” A food authority said the inference was that the ration would remain the same in weight but it would cost more. Sir Leonard Browett, Director of the National Union of Manufacturers, said it would be impossible for industry to maintain and re-equip itself out of earnings while income tax and tax on undistributed profits remained at their present crippling levels. The slight increases in meat, cheese, margarine and butter should not be sufficient to lead to new wage claims that might disturb industry arrangements with the Chancellor about prices and profits.
