REPLACEMENT OF GUTTED SAWMILL ESTIMATED AT £BOOO
(P.A.) TAUMARUNUI, April 6. Fire broke out in a sawmill adjoining the Ellis Company’s Veneer works at Manunui at 1.40 o’clock this morning. The mill had been turning out 1100 ft. of sawn timber daily. The company’s big veneer works escaped damage, but the mill was soon burnt out. The fire was discovered by the night watchman, who sounded the fire siren building.
When the brigade arrived the fire had a good hold and firemen saved it from spreading to the offices and the main veneer works nearby. The mill itself was gutted, but practically no timber was destroyed. only one log being in the building at the time. The sawn timber is removed daily. The machinery was completely destroyed. The mill and the local brigade acted promptly. The siren at Taumarunui also brought out the brigade from there. Plans have been made to transfer the eight men employed in the mill destroyed to other parts of the company’s works. The mill offices were scorched, but no damage was done to the plant which was covered by insurance. It is estimated that replacement will cost £BOOO.
