USE OF HELICOPTER FOR RESCUE WORK

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 6. The cost of heliocopter operating is down to a reasonable figure—about £3O an hour—and with increased power a machine can be controlled in conditions of strong wind and down draughts such as are likely to be met among New Zealand’s mountains. This is the opinion of Mr. K. H. Day, aviation, manager for the Vacuum Oil Company of New Zealand who has just returned from the United States and Britain. Mr. Day said in an interview today that he thought that the power and control available in modern heliocopters would make it possible for an experienced pilot to fly them effectively for search, rescue and ambulance work in most parts of New Zealand, including some of the mountainous areas. The cost of £3O an hour, he said, had been worked out by a Los Angeles mail carrying company over many hundreds of flying hours.
