DEATH OF SIR SEYMOUR HICKS, STAGE ACTOR, AUTHOR AND MANAGER
uo a.m.) LONDON, April 6. The death of Sir Seymour Hicks has occurred. He was 78 years of age. Edward Seymour Hicks, actor and author, was originally intended for the Army, but entered on a stage career in 1887, eventually in 1893 becoming the leading light comedian in the Gaiety Company. He was concerned in the building of the Globe. Queenj and Aldwych Theatres. During the First World War he originated concert parties, taking out the first company to Tne front in 1914. He wrote and produced 64 plays, and his books include "Twenty-four Years of an Actor's Life,” "If I Were Your Father," "Difficulties.” “Chestnuts Re-Roasted,” “Hullo, Australians,” and "A Book for Amateurs.” In 1931 he received the order of the Chevalier of the Legion of Honour for his services with the French Army and the honour of knighthood which was bestowed upon him in 1935 was a fitting recognition of an almost unparalleled career in the service of the theatre.
