TRADE BALANCE WITH BRITAIN UNDER FIRE

LONDON, April 5. The New Zealand Government’s action in refusing licenses for the import of electric cleaners and washing machines was criticised at yesterday’s meeting of Hoover Ltd. by Mr. C. B. Colstbn, the chairman. This action, he said, was the more regrettable having regard to the fact that British imports from New Zealand last year amounted to nearly £109,000,000 as against New Zealand imports from Britain of some £53,000,000, giving New Zealand a favourable trade balance of £56,000,000. With a population of under 2,000,000 in New Zealand, Mr. Colston added, it was not possible for the manufacturers there to achieve the economies and advantages of mass production which could be achieved in Britain.
