Looted UNRRA Goods Worth £60,000 Seized: Smuggled Into Japan
MELBOURNE, April 6
British Commonwealth Occupation Force officials in Japan have seized £60,000 worth of goods believed to have been looted from UNRRA stores in China and smuggled into Japan. The goods comprised Australian wool and fabrics worth £IO,OOO and American drugs, including streptomycin and penicillin, valued at £50,000. Officials seized the goods in raids on smuggling rings in the Fukuyama area and arrested six Chinese and three Japanese. A report released by the Australian Army headquarters said that officials believe that most of the goods were dropped before daybreak from the steamer Changte in waterproof bags and hessian wrapped tins off the coast near Fukuyama and were picked up by small boats.
