“Miss New Zealand” Quest Going Well: Closing Date Extended

With 14 nominations already received and more to come, the “Miss New Zealand" quest has attracted more women so far than did the 1947 quest at the corresponding stage. Expressing pleasure at this at a meeting of the board of directors. Sir Keith Park, president of the Air Force Association, which is conducting the quest this year, said that he was particularly pleased with the support his association was getting from kindred organisations of ex-servicemen, such as the R.S.A. in Bluff, the 2nd N.Z.E.FAssociation in Invercargill, and the Home Servicemen's Association in Wellington.

Sir Keith also thanked the Junior Chamber of Commerce for the interest its members were taking in the quest in some centres where the Air Force Association has no branches, and the Royal Society of St. George in Wellington, which is sponsoring a candidate.

More Entries Expected

Wellington heads the list of places from which entries in the quest have already been received, with four girls competing. Then comes Invercargill with three. Christchurch with two. and New Plymouth, Hamilton, Dannevirke, Palmerston North and Auckland. with one each. “One exDerienee in the last quest,” said Mr. K. W. Kilpatrick, executive director, “was that most of the nominations were made in the closing stages of the competition, and we expect that to happen again, though girls intending to compete would help us a lot by letting us know as soon as possible.” Also, as happened last time, several organisations interested in sponsoring candidates are finding themselves pressed for time, and have requested an extension of the closing date, originally April 30. Accordingly, the board has agreed to allow them a further month and the closing date will now be May 31. This will not affect the time of “Miss New Zealand's” departure for Britain. It was stated at the meeting, but will mean only a shortening of tho time between the closing date for nominations and the judges' final decision.
