NEW U.S. BOMBER ENGINE DRIVEN BY EXHAUST GASES

(10 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 5. The Curtiss-Wright Company announced tonight it had perfected a new type of aircraft engine that would enable a bomber to circle the globe without refuelling. The new engines, which harness the power of the exhaust gases, will first be used in navy patrol bombers and deliveries will begin about June. Known as “turbo-cyclone 18” engines, they will enable a bomber to fly from the United States over Labrador, Britain, Baltic Sea, North and Central Russia, Siberia and the Aleutians and back to its starting point without refuelling—a total of 14,000 miles.’

The announcemnt said that such a flight would be a plane’s extreme range.
