CHINESE PEACE TALKS OPEN IN PEKING: FIGHTING CEASES

(N.Z.P A.—Reuter —Copyright.) (10.45 a.m.) NANKING, April 5. Formal peace negotiations between the Chinese Communists and the visiting Nationalist delegation began in Communist-held Peking today.

Simultaneously, reports were received fr from Chinkiang that the Communist armies all along the north bank of the ( Yangtse, east of Nanking, have begun a , general withdrawal. Fighting has stopped at Anking, 150 , miles south-west of Nanking, which has 1 been under Communist attack for the past fortnight. According to the Nanking Evening Post the leading Communist delegate and Nationalist chief both sent telegrams to the principal army commanders along the Yangtse saying thal peace negotiations had begun and asking them to cease fighting. The newspaper said the official ceasefire order would follow in a few days.

The peace negotiations are expected to be on the basis of the Communist leader, General Mao Tse-tung's eight peace terms.
