PLACE NAMES CHANGING

Only two of a large number of decisions made by the New Zealand Geographic Board assigning new place names to various features throughout New Zealand affect the Gisborne land district.

Under one decision the railway station hitherto knowh as Wharerata. on the Gisborne-Waikokopu section,of the East Coast main trunk railway, is to be known permanently as Maraetaha, taking the name from a stream which flows under an adjacent railway bridge. A stream in the Waiau servey district south-west of Wairoa, hitherto known as the Whekanui, is henceforth to bear the name of Whenanui.
