GARAGE SITES IN TOWN: PLANNING REVISION SOUGHT

A request for reconsideration of town-planning proposals as they affect garage owners with premises between Cobden street and the Chief Post Office was received at last night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council from the Gisborne

branch of the N.Z. Retail Motor Trades’ Association. The letter conveying this request pointed out that no service industrial area was provided for in the existing town-plan which would cater reasonably for the motorist, and the association asked that the needs of the motorist and the seller of accessories should be taken into account.

It was pointed out that garage businesses were largely devoted to the sale of cars and accessories, and that the repair shops attached were in no way objectionable in a town the size of Gisborne.

The association claimed that there was no more justification for excluding the garage businesses from the area between Cobden street and the Chief Post Office than there was to exclude any other retail establishment. It requested that the designation of the area be altered to include service industrial business. The letter was referred to the council’s town-planning committee for consideration.
