MONUMENT ERECTED TO TAU HENARE OVERLOOKS MARAE

(P.A.) WHANGAREI, April 4. At Motatau, a Maori settlement between Whangarei and Kawakawa, over 2500 people, Maoris and Pakeha, yesterday witnessed the unveiling of a monument to the memory of the late Mr. Tau Henare, for '7 years member for Parliament for the Northern Maori electorate. The deceased was buried m a cemetory on a hill overlooking his late residence and the tribal meeting house and marae. It was at the cemetery and on the marae that the ceremonies took place. Among the official visitors were the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, the acting Leader of the Opposition. Mr. K. J. Holyoake. member of Parliament for Northern Maori, Mr. Paiketa. member of Parliament for Hobson. Mr. S. W. Smith, the Mayor of Whangarei, and Mrs. Coates, widow of the late Mr. G. J. Coates, In addition to all tribes of the Northern Maori district a strong contingent of Maoris from the Waikato attended. The latter were headed by Princess Te Puea. . Tnuoo tribes were led by Hooi te Hcu Keu The' Prime Minister and Mr. Holynake each placed a wreath on Mr. Henare’s grave and on the marae.
