RECORD SHIP QUEUE AT AUCKLAND
(P-A.) AUCKLAND,. April 6. A new post-war shipping tonnage record for the port of Auckland was established yesterday when the total gross tonnage of 31 overseas, intercolonial and large coastal ships in port reached 198,261 tons. This is an increase of more than 15,000 tons on the previous record established last July which followed soon after the shipping delays caused by the second Mountpark dispute.
Every berth was occupied in port yesterday. In addition, ships were at tie-up berths at the ends of wharves and eight were at anchor in the stream in a queue which stretched from off the city nearly into Rangitoto Channel. The extreme congestion in port has so far caused the diversion of one ship, the Swedish motor ship Wangaratta. She was previously due in Auckland on Thursday but because she has only a small cargo for New Zealand she will now discharge at Wellington and go to Australia.
