SCHOOL GOVERNORS TO DISCUSS SYSTEM OF CANING BY PREFECT

(P.A.) NELSON, April 6. The principle of the use of the cane in certain circumstances by the head prefect will be discussed at the next meeting of the Nelson College Council of Governors.

A member, Mr. D. Horlor, has given notice to move that the headmaster should be instructed that, in cases where a head boy considered the punishment due to a pupil should be greater than that which could be met by fines or fatigues, the case should be referred to the duty master or the headmaster to deal with.

A petition signed by 94 per cent of the pupils in the sixth fifth and fourth forms presented to the governors stated that they favoured the present system whereby a boy had the option of being caned by the head boy or the headmaster.
