AVENUE OPEN FOR EMPIRE EXCHANGES IN DIPLOMATIC SERVICE
LONDON, April 4.
There was nothing in the existing regulations to prevent young men and women' from Commonwealth countries from competing for the United Kingdom foreign ■ diplomatic service on equal terms with candidates in Britain, said the Foreign Under-Secretary, Mr. C. Mayhew, in the House of Commons teday. , . He added that the Fdreign Office was considering ways and means of extending the facilities for such candidates, but some Commonwealth countries now recruited candidates for their own foreign services and “we should not wish to attract applications in competition with them.” Mr. Mavhew said that the question of an exchange of members of the United Kingdom foreign service and those of Commonwealth countries depended on agreement with Commonwealth Governments. The Foreign Secretary would lose -no opportunity of promoting such exchanges.
