S.M. WARNS BOOKMAKERS

“IT WILL BE TACTLESS . .

(P.A.) _ NELSON, April 4. “It will be exceedingly tactless for anyone who has been before the court on one occasion for bookmaking to return."

This warning was given by Mr. H. J. Thompson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court today in imposing a fine of £l5O on Ray Septimus Cousins Ryder on a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker.

The defendant pleaded guilty. The magistrate said the records showed that Ryder had been twice convicted of keeping a common gaminghouse.

In view of the recent poll it was quite obvious that in future cases the court might have to take other steps than by way of fines, he said.
