MR. HOLLAND HAS BUSY ROUND IN AUSTRALIA
SYDNEY, April 4. • The Leader of the New Zealand Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland, who has returned to Sydney after a visit to Queensland with Mr. C. M. Bowden, M.P.. interviewed by the New Zealand Press Association, said there was widespread interest in the problems of trade between New Zealand and Australia.
In Sydney Messrs. Holland and Bowden had long discussions with both Mr. J. McGirr, Premier of New South Wales and Mr. V. Treatt, Leader of the State Opposition. Mr. McGirr explained the method of allocating State houses by the balloting system after applications had passed through transit centres. Messrs. Holland and Bowden were entertained at a private dinner by Mr. A, E. Heath, president of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce. This was attended by many leading representatives of banking, medical, shipping, insurance political, newspaper and trading interests. Views on Exchange Rate Mr. Holland’s views were sought on the effect of the altered exchange rate on trade between New Zealand and Australia; the deterioration in the balance of payments position: the much less optimistic outlook for developing trade in softwoods from New Zealand: and the scheme for providing medical benefits in Australia as compared with the New Zealand scheme. The switch whereby Australian orders for softwoods are now going to Sweden because New Zealand cannot meet competition from that country has already developed, said Mr. Holland. Mr. Holland had discussions particularly on the question of the one-House system of Government (Queensland abolished the Legislative Council many years ago) with the Premier, Mr. Hanlon, and other leading politicians. He also had discussions with traders and shipping interests on the possibility of developing trade between New Zealand and Queensland, where he said there was a big market for New Zealand pinus insignus and for fish, while there was fruit in Queensland which could be sent to New Zealand if suitable shipping could be arranged.
Messrs. Holland and Bowden also inspected a modern textile mill which anticipates extending operations to New Zealand in the future.
