IMPORTS OVER WHARF INCREASE: FEWER EXPORTS

A large increase in the imports coming over the wharves in Gisborne, but an extensive drop in the exports handled during the past five months as compared with last year, was indicated in the report of the secretary, Mr. E. A. Khull, presented at yesterday’s meeting of the Gisborne Harbour Board.

From October 1, 1948, to February 28, 1949. imports over the wharves totalled 22 23(5 tons, an increase of 3180 tons on the previous year. Exports handled to February 28 of this year totalled 9335 tons, a decrease ot 3476 tons on last year.

The cash statement for the corresponding period also showed a decrease, £11.042 having been collected this year in ship charges, wharfage and storage, railage, harbour Improvement rate and miscellaneous, compared with £12.898 last year. Payments over the same periods decreased by £735 this year from £37.138 to £36,403. Captain G. McK. Smart, harbourmaster, reported that from January 20 to March 24, 1949, 80 ships had worked the port, this being eight more than in the corresponding period last year.
