NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN
The first meeting for the year of the National Council of Women was held in the committee room of the Women's Club, Mrs. W. E. Goffe presiding over a large attendance. A warm welcome was extended to Mrs. Miller, a former member of the Hastings branch. Mrs. Quigley's , resignation was accepted with regret. A letter was received from the Dominion president forwarding the motion she, as the council's delegate, intends to bring up at the next executive meeting of the Standards Council. The motion is that women, as the main buyers and users of household goods, much desire that all goods for which standard specifications have been issued should conform to all the requirements of such standard marks. An urgent remit was received from the New ■ Plymouth branch of the N.C.W., that the Government be urged to include the question of capital and corporal punishment in the referendum of March 9 cr as soon as possible thereafter. This caused much discussion, the Gisborne branch expressing its concern at the lenient sentences given to many offenders for assaults on women and children. Afternoon tea, served by Mrs. Widdowson, concluded the meeting.
