LACK IN INDIA OF NATIVE ENGINEERS

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Mar. 29. "Many people who left India and Pakistan when the communal strife started have now returned and are engaged in commerce," said Lieut.-Colonel C. H. Richards, of the Royal Engineers, who arrived by the Wanganella from Sydney this morning. Conditions in India v/ere completely under control now. "We have been trying to show the Indians how to run things, but it has been a long job because of their lack of experienced men,". said Lieut.-Colonel Richards, who worked with the engineer in chief of the Indian Army in Delhi. India was particularly lacking in skilled engineers. There were many men trained in the arts, but in the past few Indians have entered the engineer, ing field.
