FINANCE NO BAR TO STATE HOUSES FOR GISBORNE

An assurance that the provision of finance for new housing would be available for Gisborne, if the building trade were able to handle more State house contracts, was given by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Walter Nash, in an interview on Tuesday. He said that the shortage of building operators willing to undertake contracts set the real limit on housing projects in Gisborne, where the Government had plenty of land on which to build. Gisborne was recognised as one of the towns of fast growth, and the Government was anxious to make use of its building sections. The position in the coastal townships through which he had passed on Monday was even more acute than in Gisborne, he pointed out. It was almost impossible to let contracts for Rural and remote-township projects.
