CANDIDATES SELECTED AS NAVAL CADETS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Mar. 10. The Minister of Defence, Mr. F. Jones, announced yesterday that three of the- five cadetships ofi'ered in the executive branch of the Royal New Zealand Navy in September of last year had been filled. The successful candidates were Messrs. J. A. Riddell, Dannevirke, D. G. Burgess, Auckland, and R. G. Muschamp, Christchurch. They arc to leave this month for England lo undergo approximately four years of training with the Royal Navy. On the successful completion of this training they are to return to New Zealand as sub-lieutenants, or lieutenj ants, for permanent service in the Royal New Zealand Navy. Mr. Riddell was educated at the Dannevirke High School, Mr. Burgess at the Takapuna Grammar School, Auckland, and Mr. Muschamp at Christ's College, Christchurch. In addition Mr. J. A. Burns, Wellington, has been selected for the first electrical branch cadetship offered in the Royal New Zealand Navy. After spending a year undergoing preliminary training in ships and establishments of the Royal New Zealand Navy he is to proceed to Canterbury University College to study for the Bachelor of Engineering (electrical) degree. A further two yeairs of training in ships of the Navy will then be required to qualify for service as a lieutenant (electrical). Mr. Burns was educated at St. Patrick’s College, Wellington. He afterwards attended Victoria University College and Auckland University College for the bachelor of engineering intermediate examination, which he completed in 1948.
