ENGLAND’S COAL RESOURCES ARE BEING DEPLETED

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. Mar. 8. The immense coal resources of England were being gradually depleted and work at some distance from the main shafts was increasing the costs. This statement was made by Mr. H. R. Young, who returned in the Monowai today after 10 years’ residence . in England. A brother of Mr. H. A. Young, former senior magistrate in Christchurch, he was senior resident engineer in charge of open-cast coal production and later restoration officer for opencast coal production in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Leicestershire. Mr. Young said the production of open-cast coal in England amounted to 12,000,000 tons a year. Competition by other industries affected the supply of labour, but the wages were on a fairly high level and mining conditions were being improved.
