SEPARATE KAREN STATE IN BURMA RECOMMENDED
RANGOON, Feb. 20. The Regional Autonomy Inquiry Commission set up by the Burmese Government has unanimously recommended the formation of a separate Karen State within the Union of Burma. Public reaction is that the Karen revolt should now speedily end. Meanwhile, however, fighting -is continuing and Government troops supported by Navy men and fire from gunboats have surrounded the Karens in the Insein area. Rebels continue to offer stiff resistance from behind their barricade of rice bags and observers believe that the battle may develop into a decisive engagement which will last fof several days. A Government communique said that Karen and Communist rebels had attacked and occupied Yamethin, an imnortant town about 275 miles north of Rangoon on the Mandalay railway.
