N.Z. Engineers Seek Greater Recognition of Their Services

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 21. About 250 professional engineers from all parts of the Dominion met in Auckland today in the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers. Between now and Friday the conference will discuss' technical papers, tour engineering works and join in social events. Opening the conference, the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, himself a member of the institute for 28 years, said deserved recognition of engineers’ work and proper remunerative assessment of their ability was lacking in New Zealand. “In so many avenues of employment, he proceeded, “engineers’ remuneration is controlled by central authorities, which probably know little about engineering and are unable to assess individual skill and ability of this kind.” Salaries in New Zealand were probably only half what they were in the United States. There were few men so important to general and local government, and it was unfortunate that engineers found their days crowded with vexatious frustrations and delays.
