Palestine Ex-Policeman Fined For Possession of Automatic
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 15. A former member of the Palestine police force, Bernard Swift, aged 35, an Englishman, pleaded guilty in the Police Court today to a charge of unlawfully having in his possession a .25 automatic pistol and two rounds of ammunition which he brought to New Zealand in June, 1947. “The pistol was for the protection of my wife, a member of the Palestine women police,” Swift told the magistrate, Dr. J. Molding. “The license covered it from Palestine to England. I put it with my luggage and afterwards forgot all about it.” The magistrate accepted Swift’s story and fined him £3, pointing out that people could not have such firearms in this country.
