£2O FINE IMPOSED FOR CONDUCTING LOTTERY

(P.A.) NELSON, Feb. 16. In the Magistrate’s Court Jack M. Paul pleaded guilty to a charge that on or about December 30 he conducted a lottery whereby money was gained by contributors by mode of chance. A fine of £2O was imposed. Detective-Sergeant Murray said that for some months the defendant had acted as a Nelson agent for a principal in Wellington who organised and conducted lotteries throughout New Zealand. The lotteries were by the sale of blue tickets which were sold by a sub-agent in Nelson at 2/6 each. They were numbered from 1 to 1500. The total received was £lB7/10/- and the prizes given amounted to £l3B/12/6. After wages and expenses the total profit for the Nelson agent was from £l2 to £ls.
