ICHANG MENACED BY CHINESE REDS’ DRIVE

NANKING, Feb. 10.

Ichang, 190 miles east of Hankow, was under serious threat today as the Communists swept within 10 miles of the city, according to Chinese dispatches.

The Nationalist commander for the Hupeh-Szechuan border region has already moved his headquarters from Ichang to Patung, 70 miles to the west of the south bank of the Yangtse River. According to reports received in Nanking Tunchen, 150 miles south-west of there in Anhwei, has been recaptured from the Communists.

During the continued lull along the lower reaches of the Yangtse, the United States Navy has withdrawn 1600 Marines from Tsingtao. This withdrawal reduces the United States Marines strength in China waters to two battalions.

Admiral Oscar Badger, commander in the Western Pacific, is believed to consider this force adequate for the protection of Americans in China. Admiral Badger is expected to move his headquarters to Shanghai shortly.
