TROOPS TO QUELL STRIKE IN RANGOON
RANGOON. Feb. 10. Burmese troops are reported to have been called on to proceed to Rangoon, where Government employees are on strike against wage cuts. The strikers today defied an antipicketing order to prevent non-strikers from entering the administrative offices. The strikers squatted before the gates of the Rangoon High Court as judges and lawyers tried to enter the court. Police, carrying lathis, made some arrests as the demonstrators attempted to break through the police cordon.
The Government appeal's to be determined to use strong measures to restore law and order in the capital. It has threatened to dismiss the strikers unless they return to work today. A Government spokesman said that about 45 per cent of Rangoon’s civil servants will be dismissed for disobeying the order to return to their posts by noon today. 'The civil servants are on strike against wage cuts.
