NAZIS PLOTTING TO REGAIN CONTROL OF PRESS

(10 a.m.) BERLIN, Feb. 11. Many former Nazi publishers and other “nationalistic elements” were plotting to regain control of the German press, said the American Military Governor in Germany, General L. Clay, in his monthly report. The United States Military Government would take steps to spoil their plans, he added. It was believed that the American licensed press had established itself solidly enough, physically, financially and in reader acceptance to meet the challenges it must eventually face if it was to operate as a free element.

General Clay said that progress had been good on the economic front. The biggest danger was inflation but adequate controls are believed to have been established.

Referring to de-nazification, General Clay said: “Many people say it was a failure. I think that history will prove that letting the Germans handle this affair themselves will carry with it far-reaching effects. We can count on the de-nazification measures to keep out of office for a long time the really bad Nazis.”
