Sweden Refuses To Join Nordic Defence Alliance
(10 a.m.) STOCKHOLM, Feb. 9. Sweden found it impossible to join a defensive alliance with Norway and Denmark.
In announcing this in the Swedish Parliament today, the Foreign Minister. Mr. Gesten Unden, said the recent defence talks had shown it was impossible to breach the differences between Norway and Sweden. A Scandinavian defence commission had reported that an alliance would have meant the strategic use of Scandinavian territory as a whole, joint planning, standardisation of war materials and increased measures for preventing the cutting off of supplies from abroad.
He added that Sweden had been at peace for the past 135 years and did not wish to take part in the present "cold war.”
Sweden must not be put at the disposal of any Power for military preparations.
“We must not ..undertake obligations under which one group of Powers might consider Swedish territory as another group’s advanced strongpoint” he added.
