OPIUM SUPPLIES TO BE REDUCED

CALCUTTA, Jan. 21. The West Bengal Government has decided to reduce the supply of opium to retail shops by 20 per cent. This, coupled with reports that the price of the drug is to be raised, has “perturbed addicts,” according to press reports.

The demand for opium is considerably greater than the supply, and often shops have sold out before all their regular customers can be supplied. The present decrease in supplies is due to a 10 per cent cut imposed by the Central Government on allocations to West Bengal since the beginning of the financial year.

The annual consumption of opium in the province is about 50,0001 b.
