PRISONER REARRESTED AFTER ESCAPE
MELBOURNE, Jan. 22. An, armed convict who escaped from his guard a month ago was rearrested at Brighton Beach.
The convict, Frederick Robert Simpson aged 23, escaped from his guard at the Flinders street railway station after allegedly taking a pistol from the guard. When rearrested Simpson was wearing the uniform of an officer in the merchant navy. He had been charged with escaping from custody, robbery with violence, larceny and with two counts of housebreaking.
Simpson submitted quietly to arrest after detectives had surprised him on the beach.
During the period of Simpson’s freedom his mother made numerous appeals to him through the newspapers to give himself up. Simpson said he had spent the month sleeping on beaches and had not had a hot meal in that time.
