Christchurch Heat Sets Off Fire Alarms
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 24. Several automatic fire alarms were set off yesterday afternoon by the heat. With the cloudless sky, the temperature rose to 90.8 degrees at 1.30 n.m., with a moderate north-west wind.
The wind swung to the south, and the temperature foil to 69.6 degrees at 3 p.m The wind rose to gale force at times, with gusts up to 50 miles an hour, but the weather remained fine late in the afternoon and the wind dropped.
82 DEGREES IN GISBORNE
One of the hotest days in Gisborne this summer occurred yesterday when the temperature rose to 82.0 degrees in the shade at the meteorological station, Darton Field. Hundreds of people, thankful that the hot day had come at the week-end, flocked to the beaches, where good swimming conditions afforded some relief from the heat.
