TRAMS TO OBSERVE CROSSING RULES

(S.R.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. The rights of pedestrians to use properly marked pedestrian crossings have hitherto not given them protection against risks from on-coming trams, because vehicles running on rails have not been regarded legally ay motor vehicles subject to all the controls of this class of traffic.

However, the Transport Law Amendment Act which is now in operation contains a clause which will enable the Minister of Transport to secure the issue of a regulation bringing trams within the scope of the precautions necessary when traffic approaches pedestrian crossings. During the discussion on the measure, the Minister indicated that it was his intention to provide this additional protection to pedestrians.
