VAST MILITARY BASE PLANNED IN BELGIAN CONGO
hrn(ll a.m.) BRUSSELS, Dec. 17. It is officially announced that a vast military base will be built by the Belgians at Kamina in Belgian Congo, midway between Elizabethville and Port Francqui on the Dakar-Diego Suarez air route, says the British United Press correspondent.
The announcement said the base would be built on the Kamina plateau at a height of 3500 ft. It is reliably reported that FieldMarshal Lord Montgomery, chief of the Western Union Defence Staff, urged the Belgian Government to complete the base with the utmost speed. An airfield capable of handling the largest four-engined United States planes is being built at the base which is expected to be ready by the end of 1949.
The Belgian Ministry of National Defence announced that the base will be used by the Belgian Army and Air Force. Military observers say it will be at the disposal of all the Brussels Pact nations.
