Israel Fails To Win Over Security Council For U.N. Membership

(11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 17. Israel failed to gain the Security Council’s support for United Nations’ membership today.

The vote was five in favour, five abstentions and one against. Seven votes were needed to obtain approval in the 11-nation council. Those who voted for Israel’s admission were the United States, Russia, the Ukraine, Argentine and Colombia. Those who abstained were Britain, China, France, Canada and Belgium. Syria voted against the application. The British and French proposals to postpone the voting were rejected. Israeli’s representative, Mr. Aubrey Eban, said: “We will submit our application again when we feel like it.” Sir Alexander Cadogan (Britain) said he could not understand why the Soviet delegate should urge immediate membership for Israel after vetoing the applications of 12 other countries. Faris El Khoury (Syria) said Israel’s admission to the United Nations would confer great political advantage on her.
