HISS DENIES CHARGE OF PERJURY
(10 a.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 17. Alger Hiss, a former State Department official, yesterday pleaded not guilty to the Federal Grand Jury’s charge that he lied when he denied giving secret Government papers to the ex-Communist agent, Whittaker Chambers.
The judge fixed January 24 as the tentative date for the trial and set the bail at 5000 dollars.
