COW BEEF NOT WANTED IN U.K.: PRICES ADJUSTED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 16. The Minister of Marketing, Mr. E. L. Cullen, announced yesterday that export schedule prices for all boner beef are to be increased by 2/6 per 1001 b, to 31/-. This is in compensation for the loss sustained by producers through the elimination of F.A.Q. description of cowbeef, which is no longer acceptable to the United Kingdom Ministry of Food for emergency use as part of the public ration. Cow-beef formerly graded F.A.Q, will in future be included with bonerquality beef and used for manufacturing purposes. The chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, Mr. G. H. Grigg upon being asked for his views, stated that although this grade of cow-beef had been established as part of the bulk purchase contract with the United Kingdom during the 1944-45 season, the United Kingdom Ministry of Food had from time to time expressed dissatisfaction with it, and during recent negotiations had decided to cancel it. The adjustment now authorised was obtained by drawing upon the Meat Industry Stabilisation Account, and could be regarded as satisfactory, said Mr. Grigg.
