CHRISTMAS RUSH BEGINNING AT THE CHIEF POST OFFICE

One of the busiest places during the Christmas period is always the post and telegraph office. Present indications are that this year will be no exception. Already the mail-room at the Chief Post Office, Gisborne, is becoming busier as people begin to post their >:ristmas cards and presents to friends in other parts of New Zealand. A “post early” campaign is being conducted by the post office, and it is expected that this will be taken heed of by the public. Christmas postings this year to date are not as heavy as was the case last year. However, it is expected that by the middle of next week, with only 10 days to go before Christmas, postings will be very heavy. . Preparations are in hand to bring extra staff into the mail-room as soon as the rush commences, while the postmen also will have their helpers as soon as the mail becomes too much for one man to handle. Counter staffs will be augmented over the Christmas period, thus avoiding queues. During the week before Christmas the telegraph branch will handle thousands of inward and outward messages, many containing Christmas greetings. Arrangements are in hand for the Gisborne" staff to be considerably .augmented.
