TWO MONTHS RECESS FOR GISBORNE CHESS

A decision to go into recess in December and January and to resume play in the Army Hall each Monday and Thursday evenings at the beginning of February was made at the annual general meeting of the Gisborne Chess Club this week. When re-electing Mr. Charles Blackburn as patron, members referred to his illness and expressed the hope that his recovery would be effected speedily. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. J. H. Walker; vice-presi-dent, Mr. F. J. Butler: hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. LI. Meredith; executive, Messrs. H. J. Toyc, D. Cranswick and F. Day; hon. auditor, Mr. R. J. Thompson. The chairman, Mr. Butler, thanked the outgoing executive officers for their work during the year, mentioning, particularly, the satisfactory state of the finances. He felt the club could look forward to a good year ahead and increased membership. Two new members had joined for next season and there were prospects of others. It was agreed that the open Swiss tournament had proved a very enjoyable and successful innovation and the Y.M.C.A. was thanked for providing the necessary accommodation. Votes of thanks to the Army Department and the press brought the meeting to a close.
