ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL IN SHIP WITHOUT PAYING FARE
(P.A.)
WELLINGTON, Dec. 10.
A young American who was stated to be on his way to Melbourne University, Louis Gordon, aged 22, was charged" in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday with attempting to travel in the Wanganella without paying his fare. Sub-Inspector Brown said in evidence that the accused had been seen in the shadows of the shed on Queen's wharf last night. He had a bag with him and told a constable who accosted him that he was a member of the crew and was about to go aboard. Inquiries revealed that the accused had recently come to New Zealand by plane and had intended to proceed to Melbourne University to take up an arts course, reporting there on January 1. The accused had given a seaman on the Wanganella 45 dollars to ensure his accommodation on the ship. He had papers in his possession showing that he had been honourably discharged from the United States Navy and that he had been accepted at the university. “You know, I suppose, that you have lost that 45 dollars,” said the magistrate, Mr. A. M. Goulding.
“Yes, I guess I have,” replied the accused.
Commenting that it was a stupid thing for the accused to do, Mr, Colliding imposed a fine of £2.
