GIRLS’ COLLEGE PRINCIPAL FEARS EDUCATION TREND

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 9. Education in New Zealand was fast becoming a utility service which under the pressing needs of industry was preparing children for an existence based on material conceptions and nothing more, said the principal of the Wellington Girls' College, Miss E. M. North, at the college prize-giving ceremony last night. '‘All is not well with education.” she said. “It can easily be charged against most New Zealand citizens that they regard the purpose of education as purely utilitarian.

“It seems to me that the needs of industry are so pressing that we forget that pupils come to school to learn. Our own objectives are material ones and wo lack moral incentive.

“Inspectors and vocational guidance officers interviewing pupils have been very impressed by the shrewdness and calculating manner in which pupils view their futures. I pray that we should not forget the things of the spirit.”
