BENEFICIAL RAIN: GARDENS SOAKED AND TANKS REFILLED
Since Saturday afternoon Gisborne people have taken new interest in their gardens and those depending on tanks for their domestic supply of water have been able to again enjoy the luxury of using as much water as they want without fear of running the tank dry. . ' ... . For the most part the rain, although fairly steady, has been light and extremely beneficial to gardens. The fall from Saturday to 9 a.m, yesterday recorded at the meteorological statnon, Darton Field, was 2.53 in„ more than thrice the quantity recorded during the whole of last month. For the 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday the recording was 1.29 in„ slightly more than fell at the week-end. The strong westerly winds of last month dried gardens and pastures, and with the entire prohibition of hosing imposed on Saturday the outlook for gardeners appeared black. The. gentle penetrating rain has put new life into plants, however. Nurserymen reported yesterday that there was a big demand on Monday and yesterday for seedlings, to be planted out as soon as the rain stops. Tanks in many cases were down to within a few rungs of the bottom, and in some cases where young children were in the house water had already had to be carted to replenish empty tanks.
