RACING YACHTS DAMAGED IN GALE

SYDNEY, Oct. 5. The 40-ft. cutter Trade Winds which crossed the finishing line with its sails in shreds has been adjudged the winner on its handicap of a gruelling three-day race of 352 miles to Montague Island and back.

Early calms toliowed by winds of gale torce, heavy seas, low temperatures and driving rain made the race the hardest for many years. Hardly a yacht came through without the loss of sails and damage to equipment. Of 15 yachts competing only seven completed the course.
