Artesian Water From Fissure

The flooding of Murray Creek, a small tributary of the Ngaruroro River, which enters the sea at Clive, has resulted in the finding of a high crack along the beach. The crack, which is thought to have been caused by the 1931 Napier earthquake, has artesian water flowing freely from it. Effect of Sterling: Change “By raising the New Zealand £ to parity with sterling, you have raised our cost of living 30 per cent,” writes a New Zealander living in Fiji to a friend in Christchurch. "Butler that has arrived here since the change is 3/11 per lb., and it costs 2/4 per lb. for dripping. There is another side to the picture, however—the move has cost New Zealand the bulk of the island trade, as all orders have been cancelled and transferred to Australia. It is a pity that this should have happened in view of the fact that New Zealand had such a good market here, but if we kept to New Zealand produce we should all be broke in a few months.” The writer, Mr. A. G. Welsh, a radio technician, formerly of Ashburton, states that things would not be so bad if Fiji raised the value of her money to that of sterling, but there seemed little likelihood of that for some time. It was hard to picture what would happen if Australia followed the lead of New Zealand.
