Planning Western Union Defence
(11 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 3. Steps to complete the Western Union defence system are expected to follow the military decisions reached in Paris last week, says the Observer's political correspondent.
One of them may be the setting up of a general economic staff to plan the manufacture of armaments and the supply of raw materials. The permanent military committee will have to deal with problems of production and procurement of equipment. It is this initial work which is expected to lead to some form of supply board for the whole Western Union.
The committee will probably meet regularly and work out strategy and tactics to be followed in event of war. One plan envisages the possibility of losing the whole European mainland. The Associated Press correspondent in Copenhagen says that Danish, Swedish and Norwegian Ministers of defence will probably meet at Oslo on October 15 to discuss a possible Scandinavian defence plan.
