FLARE-UP IN HOUSE : REMARK WITHDRAWN
(P.R.) WELLINGTON. Oct. 1. The House of Representatives had a subdued air when it resumed this morning after an all-night sitting and many benches were vacant. However, a little liveliness developed as a result of a question of which Mr. A. S Sutherland (Oppos., Hauraki) gave notice. He asked the Minister of Labour, Mr. A. McLagan, if he would look into the question of the strained relationships between the Waterside Workers’ Union in Auckland and the Waterfront Industry Commission. He referred to an allegation of a union representative that the employers were “sheltering behind the commission” and that until the workers’ claim 1 for a 2s an hour extra for unloading wheat was granted, no more wheat would be handled. “Scavenging again,” commented Mr. McLagan, and this produced a formal protest from Mr. W. A. Sheat (Oppos., Patea).
The Speaker asked the Minister to withdraw his remark if he had intended any reflection on a member.
, "I did make the interjection,” replied Mr. McLagan because of the nature of the question which, I believe, is intended to stir up industrial ill-will.” Mr. McLagan withdrew his remark.
